Hopedale Medical Complex Hosts Round Table with Dr. William Werner
February 1, 2013

Hopedale, IL – Members of the Tazewell County Medical Society (TCMS) convened a special meeting with William Werner, MD, the President of the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS), and members of the ISMS staff, on January 24th at Hopedale Medical Complex. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the alarming increase in accidental deaths from prescription drug overdoses in Tazewell County and throughout Illinois. Tazewell County Coroner, Jeff Baldi, DDS, presented statistics analyzing the past several years of prescription drug overdoses. TCMS President, Gail Williamson, MD, and several TCMS physicians also attended and participated in a lengthy roundtable discussion of the issues.

Many ideas were discussed for future efforts at a county, state, and national level: public education on the dangers of misusing prescription drugs, precise prescription management protocols, statewide prescription monitoring, and law enforcement. Dr. Williamson presented these suggestions at a national meeting sponsored by the American Medical Association in Chicago on January 30th.
