Impact of Stroke
Every 45 seconds, someone in America has a stroke. Every 3 minutes, someone dies of one.
Stroke killed an estimated 163,538 people in 2001 and is the nation’s third leading cause of death, ranking behind diseases of the heart and all forms of cancer. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States.
Are you at risk for Stroke?
It is recommended that you speak with your primary physician about your risk factors for vascular and heart disease to see if a one or more screening tests would be beneficial for you.
While a doctor’s order is not required to have a stroke screen done, it is required that your primary physician contact information be provided before the stroke screen can be performed.
Stroke Screens
Stroke Screens evaluate plaque buildup in the carotid arteries located on each side of the neck. Stroke screenings are performed using ultrasound technology to directly image the vessel and measure the blood flow velocity to determine if there is narrowing of the carotid artery restricting blood flow to the brain.
Other Vascular Screenings Offered
It is recommended that you speak with your primary physician about your risk factors for vascular and heart disease to see if a one or more screening tests would be beneficial for you.
While a doctor’s order is not required to have a vascular screening done, it is required that your primary physician contact information be provided before the vascular screen can be performed.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screens
AAA screens use ultrasound technology to measure the size of the abdominal aorta to determine if the vessel is enlarged. If enlarged it is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm or AAA. This is a potentially life threatening condition if not treated often referred to as the ‘silent killer’ because there are usually no symptoms prior to a rupture of the vessel.
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Screens
PAD screens use simple blood pressure measurements at the arm and the ankle to evaluate the blood flow in the leg arteries. Significant blockages in a leg artery can cause pain in the leg after a short distance of walking.
